I have been following Volpin Props for a while now on Facebook and on Flickr, enjoying seeing what he is doing in his prop shop, but also learning new tips on what to do and pitfalls he has come across whilst building. Today I came across his Tested articles and thought I would share the links here.
I also highly recommend Volpin's Painting and Weathering for Props ebook. I have been prop building for several years now, and I learned so much from it. Worth every cent of the small asking price of US$8!Izzyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11515097147507209195noreply@blogger.com1Hobart TAS, Australia-42.881903 147.32381399999997-43.627037 146.03292049999996 -42.136769 148.61470749999998tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-995152084272382789.post-88103733364381017572015-04-19T12:30:00.000+10:002015-04-19T18:54:24.642+10:00Hogwarts Uniform – a History Pt 4

I was rather amazed when I was in the city the other day and walked past the clothes store JayJays. To my delight they had GIANT posters of their new Hogwarts range in the window. Not being much of wide neck or white t-shirt person (and the Quidditch t-shirt was not in my size), I went for a guys pullover with the Hogwarts crest. The quality is okay, and good for warmer autumn days in Tasmania, or under a jacket.

The instructions make it look pretty easy to make... So very tempting indeed to have for a bit of fun, especially as I LOVE Lego so much! Maybe, one day. :D

I also came across some other fun ideas, but beyond my time poor life at the moment. However they are too cool not to share.

A giant wooden Lego man.

And a giant Lego space man.

The internet can be a wonderful thing, but also can be very
frustrating. As I have come late to making a Harry Potter costume, a lot of
links are now broken, or images have gone. So here are few bits that I found
useful. I will copy useful portions here on my blog with source links, just in
case they disappear in the near future.

For many years I was reluctant to try the Harry Potter
novels. Partially because there was so much hype over the first movie, but when
I saw it in the cinema, it was fun mainly from the wonderful cast, but I felt I
was missing something. I was also reading through the Lord of the Rings trilogy
and associated books.

Then last year a friend gave me the first book on audio
format, read by Stephen Fry. As I just love what Stephen Fry does, and his
voice, I could not help but try this audio book. At the time I was doing a lot
of prop building and listening to audio books was a real pleasure, as I did not
have a moment to read actual books. Within a short time, I was hooked. Over the
summer and autumn I listened to all of the books, and simply loved them! I found
myself wishing that I had read them sooner. I had been a fool to doubt the
quality of the books!

Now that I had experienced the books, I thought it was time
to give the movies a go too. I still think I prefer the books, but the movies
made a lot more sense, and I could understand that they had to cut large

The costumes in the films were great; I especially liked the

The first question, what house? A good friend of mine joked
on several occasions that I am rather a Gryffindor. Looking at myself when I

I am still here, still tinkering on my hobbies.

7th December last year, I came to my laptop that was running fine a few minutes earlier and it just had a black screen. It could not be revived. It took over two months until work managed to get a replacement laptop to me with all my data recovered on it. So now I can access the web more easily and get back to blogging my creative endeavours.

More posts to follow shortly, so stay tuned.
It is just a waste of paper.

To stop this happening here, I have installed a new tool, called PrintFriendly. So if you open a post you are interested (as a separate post, not in the blog feed), then you will have a couple icons come up, giving you the option to print the post, or save it as a PDF. All free, and free of ads too. I hope it saves some hassles as well as saving some trees.
As I could see the boundary a lot easier on the inside of the ABS plastic, I drew my lines with a 6B pencil then slowly, using a Olfa craft knife, I scored the lines, then cut deeper into them till I went through. I have not done the upper part that joins to the back yet as I need the back to see how much I need to take off, but once I do that I will sand the edges with wet and dry sand paper so they will not only have a better shape, they will also not be so sharp.
Thanks Nick! :) So exciting!
I kept thinking about that rather than concentrating totally on the troop. My pouches also need a larger area of tethering rather than just the upper hinge too, especially as I was carrying most of the troops wallets and keys in them!

Here are my solutions to my two problems.

I bought a pack of four black military shirt stays to act like suspenders. They have clips already attached, they have adjustment clips, and are shorter then suspenders. One would have been enough on each side, but I wanted there to be room for adjustment, so I neatly joined two together using a decorative zig-zag stitch. The zig-zag keeps the edges from fraying and allows a bit of stretch in the joint. I made small button holes directly on the cummerbund for the stays to attach.

When I put on the cummerbund, I just undo the main Velcro on the back, leaving the under-strap still attached to the Velcro, and the stays in place, and climb into it.
The previous post includes the SuitAbility Jodhpur pattern and instructions. To make my pattern, I took the images from the pattern file and resized them in Photoshop, then saved each page as a PDF. I then placed the PDF file into a full version of Adobe Acrobat, set "print scaling" in the "print" menu to "Tile Large Pages" so I was able to print the large sheets onto A3 sheets (but it can be printed on what ever paper you have).

The files below are the resized ones I made. They are all PDF's.

The pants have not been cuffed, and I have not put the waistband on. Alterations to the pattern that are planned to include a slight increase in the back (for the times like now when I have eaten far too many Easter eggs), a slight trim of the sides of the Jodhpurs so it isn't as extreme, and an addition of about 3cm to the length of the pants to be cuffed properly.

Spook enjoys large sheets of fabric and paper and has to be taken to another room otherwise he rolls and dives on it all very cutely. :DIzzyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11515097147507209195noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-995152084272382789.post-61349672252531350232011-04-22T22:13:00.000+10:002011-04-22T22:13:57.015+10:00Imperial Officer Pants PatternI have been interested in the Imperial Officer uniform for a while, especially the black one. So I thought I would give it a go sewing one. I have been using the out of print SuitAbility Jodhpur pattern that Char Tozard made available, scaling the photos to the correct size, printing them on A3 sheets, gluing them together, then tracing the around the correct size. This is the result.

Now time to cut out the calico and test the pattern.
